TRUCKEE/TAHOE, Calif. - School district trustees this week unanimously OK'd a proposed charter school that plans to open in a few months. Trustees of the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District approved Sierra Expeditionary Learning School for the next four years on the condition school representatives allow a non-voting district member to be on the charter school's board and they provide a four-year budget projection plan. "We are so excited. Thank you to the board for this fabulous opportunity," said Erica Stein, co-chair for the charter school. Originally, trustees approved the school for only three years, but later changed it to four when school reps asked for more time to measure student improvement. Upon opening, Stein said SELS will enroll 63 students from kindergarten to fifth grade. While all state standardized tests will be taken by students, Stein said the curriculum will also focus itself on a hands-on-learning model developed by Outward Bound, a natio School district trustees this week unanimously OK'd a proposed charter

According to the agenda, the board is scheduled to take action on the "Sierra Charter School Petition," among other items. Charles "Chuck" Olano, born Dec. 10, 1927, in Fallon, Nev., died Feb. 22, 2010, in Fallon. He was 82. After high school, Chuck joined the US Army as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne at the latter part of World War II. After returning, he married Yolanda Giovannoni on March 29, 1949, in Reno, Nev. They later lived in Truckee for 55 years. He worked as a mechanic for Thornton's Garage, and later was self employed as a welder. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his granddaughter, Amber. He retired in 2004 to Fernley, Nev. He was preceded in death by parents Cosme and Tomasa; a brother, Manuel; and sister, Rosie Weddle. A private ceremony was held.
